“Póporo y Maíz" explores a genderless futurity by referencing and reimagining cultural and spiritual relics and traditions of the past, paying homage to life forces before colonization.

Through the symbolism of the póporo, a relic traditionally used by Indigenous communities in Colombia since 300 CE to store lime for coca chewing, and reflecting on the balance between feminine and masculine forces, this print reimagines the póporo as a genderless form, with surgical scars where breasts once lay are now held each hand.

At the center of the piece are portraits of two figures bound in a life partnership, which reinforces the theme of reclaiming identity and resisting colonial suppression, much like the revered maíz itself.

"Póporo y Maíz" was made possible by our two month residency this summer at Women's Studio Workshop. It is an edition of 8 with two colorways, and is made using photopolymer plate, chine-collé and silkscreen.
