The Defender depicts Malaya Tuyay, a local Filipinx artist and activist. This print highlights Malaya’s commitment to uplifting indigenous activism in the Philippines by establishing networks in California. It also highlights her contributions to preserving the traditional Filipino martial art form, Kali. A gift from her Kali teacher, her machete is a symbol of transnational solidarity. The mandala blends Filipinx, Colombian and Tanzanian motifs.
